Sweden’s first clothing library, Lånegarderoben, is just like that of a regular library: the clothing library is stocked with current clothing and members simply borrow and return, eliminating the “need” to buy what’s hot right now while helping you to stay in style. The idea is to be able to renew your wardrobe without contributing to increased consumption.

Let’s face it, keeping your wardrobe up to date leads to irresponsible consumerism. People buy what’s hot now, wear it a few times, and move on. Concepts like this will help consumers adopt a more sustainable approach to fashion. We’re a fan!

Check out this little guy! What a creative way to grow herbs or small flowers using an eggshell as biodegradable planter.

It is all very simple: Fill the egg shell with potting soil, add the seeds of your choice and water. Make sure to keep the seeds nice and wet for optimal growth. If you want to make things a bit more advanced, you can paint a funny face on the shell and decorate as you wish. When the plants get too big for the shells, you can transplant them straight to the soil, shell and all. Hope everyone had a wonderful Easter/Passover weekend!

Amazing Kindergarten Faberborg in Oslo, Norway by Reiulf Ramstad Architects.

About the design: The area is characterized by residential buildings from 1900-1950. As a requirement from the local authority, the kindergarten is to have a contemporary expression. With its location in the middle of a small city park, the kindergarten has an outdoor area that is protected like an enclosed garden. The planning solution enables the 4 kindergarten units to function both independently and together as required. All units share a common area and a kitchen in the heart of the building. Administration is placed on the upper floor separate from children areas.

Can you believe this building is a kindergarten?!!

Vintage Danish Design Posters

Northern Elevation recently posted a collection of vintage, Danish design posters. Each features an iconic modernist furniture design next to Hans Wegner, Ole Wanscher, Arne Jacobsen and Nanna Ditzel. Very little information aside from being produced in Denmark and the photographer being Paul Salomonsen.

Helsinki: The 2012 Design Capital of the World

The Finnish capital, Helsinki, which is under consideration for a satellite Guggenheim museum, has been named World Design Capital 2012 by the Montreal-based International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID). Appointed to cities based on their accomplishments and commitment to design as an effective tool for social, cultural and economic development, the WDC designation is an ambitious project initiated and managed by Icsid to promote the impact of design on quality of life.

According to the ICSID website, “For the City of Helsinki, design has for decades been a pivotal enabler to building an open city. The concept of ‘Embedded Design’ has tied design to innovation and has enabled desirable solutions that have addressed the needs of its inhabitants.

Helsinki is a vibrant community - a great place to work, live and explore. A modern landscape where talented individuals encompass every sphere of international and Finnish society, it is a hotbed for innovation and a positive environment for creative industries. The City of Helsinki will follow in the footsteps of Torino (Italy) and Seoul (South Korea) to develop an inviting programme for 2012.”
